- Read through Beowulf Prologue in groups, establishing the elements evident about the culture and history of the time period
- Read through the Prologue together as a class on the document reader, identifying aspects of the text that provide insight into the culture and history of the time period
- If time allows, begin to read Part I (Grendal) in the text. While students take turns reading aloud in class, one students will be at the board drawing the events that are taking place, helping students to understand that Beowulf is written in riddles. Students should not take the prose literally, but be able to critically analyze the events taking place, deciphering the riddles in order to understand the context of the metaphors and plot.
